The Crumhorn (from German Krummhoerner, which means bent horn) was most commonly used during the Renaissance period. It is basically a partially bent flute, and has a double reed installed inside the pipe. The instrument as a whole might be regarded as the chanter part of a bagpipe. Fingerholes change the length of the pipe.

The sound of the Crumhorn is similar to that of the shawm, although much softer.
