The name "shawm" is the generic name for a pipe instrument that is a flared pipe, which follows the form of an animal horn. Through the course of time fingerholes were added to change the length of the pipe, and later reeds were added as resonators. Such instruments date back several thousand years. The Ancient Egyptians depicted them in their wall art.
Modern variations of the shawm include the oboe. Modern shawms differ from ancient ones mainly in the materials used for manufacturing, as well as in some cases the addition of valves.
