The clef is used for music notation.
Some clefs are:

| bass | F clef |
| alto | C clef |
| tenor | C clef |
The clef is used for visual notation. For audio the key attribute is used. These attributes thus have exactly the same function, except that they are rendered differently. Perhaps a rendering machine could automatically translate the key into clef.
