The piccolo (which in Italian means small) is a small, high-pitched flute. It has valved holes used to alter the length of the pipe to ahieve different pitches. The pipe shape is similar to that of the flute, and so is the mouthpiece. Piccolos are made from many different types of materials, ranging from natural woods, to artificial materials such as plastics.
