The mandolin may be regarded as a small lute or guitar, which typically has 4 double strings, and a much higher pitch range. There are different designs of mandolins. Some have flat backs, while others have bulging backs (Neapolitan style). As their sound is fainter than that of the guitar, they are often played in tremelo style. The Greek bouzouki may be regarded as a type of mandolin.
