Gusli

The gusli is a type of lyre or zither, and perhaps descendent of the ancient Greek kythare played in the Ukraine. Similar instruments from other cultures include the Chinese gu zheng and Japanese koto. The instrument does not have a neck like a guitar, and the strings are mounted running across the entire soundbox. As it is more awkward to hold than a guitar, musicians often play the instrument in the sitting position, the instrument resting on their laps. The instrument might also be carried with a strap holding it.

The number of strings vary between 11 and 36.
