Upbeat is a type of bar in notation that contains initial notes before the proper notation bar begins. This is usually a partial bar, but the notation is incomplete as the total values of the symbols do not necessarily add up to the required value. Upbeat is irrelevant for performance markup, but should not be confused with the count-in used in live bands.
