Craft types

The Kattumaran is the traditional fishing craft, consisting of typically two logs strung together. Some have a long-shaft outboard engine, but most are rowed using a plank -- i.e. not a contoured oar.

Close-up of Kattumaran

Muscle powered boat

This large and heavy vallam has no outboard motor, and is rowed using muscle power.

Motorized vallams

In the south these motorized vallams dominate the main landing centres, although they are not the most used craft. Kattumarans are the most populous craft.

Mechanized boats

Most of the mechanized boats are found on the north coast of Kerala. They fish quite some distance off shore (up to 200Km), and most often used for deep-sea fishing. The are at sea for a week or two on each trip.
