Bathymetric map of Kerala cost

The continental plate on the Kerala coast results in the intervals of the slope from shore to deep sea to be at different distances from shore. As this bathymetric map indicates, in the south deep ocean is much closer to shore than in the north (Sajeev 1993).

Mud from 41 rivers flowing into the ocean leave mud banks (called chakara in Malayalam) that calm the waves. It also enriches the water with plankton on which fish and prawns feed close to the shore – about 2Km out to sea. For this kind of fishing, primitive and low-tech craft can be used.
