  Sien die lirieke.

Woorde sluit dinge oop. Musiek ook. My woorde en musiek was jare toegesluit.

Words unlock many things. Music does that too. My words and music were locked up for years.
Now the treasure chest is unlocked to release the words and music in this first distributed album.

2. Rooijakkals

Khoikhoi fables tell stories about this jackal's trickery. He often outwits Lion.

There are people who are even more cunning.

3. Wit perd

Hierdie is my perd song.

The pulsating rhythm of a horse is often used as an image or metaphor for sensuality and intimacy. For example, in 1973 Peter Shaffer wrote a play, Equus, about a young man who had a pathological fascination with horses, which he regarded as sensual.

This is my horse song.

4. Moeder Afrika

In Suid-Afrika is daar verskeie argeologiese bewyse hiervoor.

Africa is the birthplace of homo sapiens sapiens. In South Africa there is abundant evidence for this. At the Blombos Cave near Jongensfontein in the western Cape some evidence is dated to between 70'000 and 100'000 years ago. Our distant ancestors who lived there were cognitively well developed. There are abstract geometric patterns on a piece of ochre - something animals such as our distant cousins, the primates, do not do.

Africa is our mother. But generally speaking things are desperate on our birth continent.

Perhaps each one of us have experience of a friend/lover who just never want to accept responsibility when things begin to go wrong. They are the most innocent, sweet, holy angles, but their flashing angry eyes mow you down. I have seen many such people, and I myself also bumped into a few.

In comics those flashing eyes are drawn with knives shooting from their eyes. Hopefully the wheel turns and one day the dagger hits them...

6. Augustus

On the Highveld of South Africa August is known as the windy month. With the changing seasons August winds slowly bring spring, which officially starts on 1 September (as 1 May in the northern hemisphere).

Winter on the South African Highveld is pretty damn ugly and dusty. August is also the time for hay fever and running noses for many people.

The song Augustus is a wish that the winds blow away the death of winter sooner so that spring may arrive.

7. Robot

Ek kan hom hoor stop by elke robot.

So eintlik is hierdie song antieke geskiedenis.

Robot is the peculiar South African word for traffic light. The song Robot is about an empty city in the early hours after midnight. This is usually the most quiet times in a city. But young bikers and guys with suped-up cars often shatter the silence.

My apartment was on the 3rd floor and the window looked out over a street corner with a traffic light - a robot. When it rained the changing light reflected on the tar - much like slow-motion disco lights. The silence of the night with red, orange and green lights reflecting on the wet tar was hypnotizing. But then, and often, some or other biker would race from the far west to the east. I could hear him stop at each traffic light. He'd switch to lower gears at high revs. While he waits, it is vrm vrm vrm, and then speeding off on high revs until the following traffic light.

So it continues and the sound is like stereo from the west to the east. The most fascinating bit of the quiet nights with engine noise from one traffic light to the next is that a piece of technology with flashing lights can control human life. When the robot says stop, we stop.

Well, today South Africans are no longer that obedient to laws! Robots are easily ignored. So this song is actually ancient history.
